There are a couple places where a wingman generally wont be helpful.  These are less social places, like the grocery store or a book store.

• give you a good introduction - great first impressions are crucial
• find out information about the girl so you dont have to ask yourself
• mention some of your good qualities so you dont have to (so you wont seem like you are bragging)
• give you another view on what or wouldnt be a good idea in an appoach
• give an extra push to break the ice if one get reluctant
